Understanding How Botox Works
Botox is used to treat dynamic wrinkles, or wrinkles that are a result of repeated facial expressions, such as squinting or raising of the eyebrows. Made of botulinum toxin, Botox is injected into the facial muscles that are responsible for these facial expressions. The injectable solution causes the facial muscles to temporarily relax so they can no longer contract. Botox injections will not, however, affect your ability to make facial expressions. Instead, the wrinkles and lines on the overlying skin smooth out, creating a softer and youthful appearance. Botox can also be injected into the facial muscles to treat muscle spasms, which are often a result of teeth clenching or grinding.
The effects of Botox typically last between three and four months, depending on several factors. For instance, patients with strong or large facial muscles may notice that their results last less than three months while individuals with weak or small facial muscles may enjoy their results for longer than four months. Treatment Details
Treatment with Botox can take approximately 30 minutes or less. We will use a fine needle to inject the Botox solution into the facial muscles. Once treatment is complete, you will be able to return to your regular activities. Minor side effects are temporary but can include swelling, soreness and redness in the treatment area similar in appearance to a small welt. These should go away within a few hours. Results will appear in as little as three to four days with maximum efficacy occurring typically two weeks after initial treatment.
