Traditional Braces vs. Invisalign

Braces and Invisalign are two of the most popular orthodontic treatments patients can choose to straighten their smile. However, patients should be aware of the advantages and disadvantages of each treatment before choosing one.

Here, Dr. Jennifer Chambers and Dr. Cory Chambers of Cobblestone Park Family Dental compare the specifics of traditional braces and Invisalign.

How Do Braces and Invisalign Work?

Traditional braces are made of a series of brackets and arch wires that are affixed to the teeth and secured in place with elastic ties. The brackets and wires work together to apply constant pressure to the teeth to gradually shift them into proper alignment. The brackets can be metal, composite, ceramic or a combination of materials. Braces are worn 24/7 and adjusted by a dental professional every few weeks (between three to 10 weeks).

Invisalign uses a series of clear and discreet alignment trays that apply gentle pressure on the teeth. The aligners are created using dental impressions of a patient’s teeth, ensuring a snug and precise fit. Each set of aligners are worn for approximately two to three weeks and then replaced with the next set that will work to move teeth into the next desired position. It’s recommended that patients wear their Invisalign aligners for at least 22 hours a day and only remove them to eat, drink, brush and floss teeth, and clean the aligners.

Who Is a Candidate for Each Treatment?

Many patients prefer the discreet design of Invisalign over traditional metal braces, but not everyone is an appropriate candidate for Invisalign. Depending on the degree of spacing, crowding, alignment, and bite issues one option might be preferable over the other.  An in-office evaluation is needed to determine the best course of treatment for each individual patient.

How Long Does Treatment Last?

The duration of both treatments depends on the degree of correction needed. Braces can be worn for anywhere between six months to two or more years. Because Invisalign is used to treat simpler orthodontic issues, treatment is usually shorter than with traditional braces. Most adult patients complete treatment with Invisalign within one year.

Comparing Costs

The cost of Invisalign is comparable to the cost of braces. Treatment cost for both varies depending on several factors including the duration and complexity of treatment.
